Let’s look at some round-neck styles, which can be similar to the V-neck, but definitely have their own charm. Let’s start with a very British look: a T-shirt under a round-neck sweater and overcoat. Leave the T untucked if you can’t see it at the neck.
How about a round-neck with a tie straight out of Jermyn Street SW1? Ideal for a weekend in the country with the in-laws and a healthy walk home from Sunday lunch at the local pub!
The cardigan can offer a much more casual style to the ones we’ve looked at up to now for the simple reason that you can change it so much with the size of the knit and the size and type of buttons. You can’t wear a tie with it? Of course you can! Everything is possible with the right mix of materials, colours and proportions of your look, with that touch of daring which we (girls) love to see!
This first example we see an Aran-style cardigan over a white shirt and jeans – that’s a fabulous casual combination.
Shawl collar (midway between a v-neck and a roll-neck)
A wool hoody-sweater will make you stand out if you do it right (and if you’re not sure, let me help you) so have a go! Fortune favours the brave!
This example features a button-up-hoody-sweater with tweed jacket and tie. What a great way to combine modern and traditional!
Example 3 takes a cardigan similar to Example 1 (but with button-over patch pockets) and makes it more formal by adding a tie – even though it’s over a denim shirt. Think cozy restaurant with friends or even a first date.
And if formal is your thing let’s go all 007 licensed-to-kill-and-thrill wearing a roll-neck under a suit, or jacket and dress trousers combination. Tuck a contrasting handkerchief into the breast-pocket to finish it off – and leave your competition gasping….
